What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of your body, and it is based on the principle that your well-being depends on having the parts of your body—such as the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues—all function together smoothly.

To an osteopath, for your body to work well its structure must also work well. Therefore, osteopaths seek to restore your body to a state of balance. Whenever possible, they do this without recommending the use of drugs or surgery.

Osteopathic patients include the young, the elderly, manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women, children, amateur or professional athletes, and others who pursue sports.

Patients seek treatment from osteopaths for a wide variety of conditions, including back pain, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis, and sports injuries.

In the United Kingdom, osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. They are licensed, and they renew their registrations and licenses each year. As part of this yearly process, the General Osteopathic Council confirms that each osteopath has up-to-date professional indemnity insurance, is in good health and of good character, and has met all mandatory continuing professional development requirements.

Osteopaths use touch, physical manipulation, stretching, and massage to increase the mobility of your joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood supply to your nerves and tissues, and to support your body’s own healing mechanisms.

Osteopaths may also provide advice about such things as lifestyle changes, diet, posture and movement patterns, and exercise, all designed to aid recovery, promote health, and prevent symptoms from recurring.

“Miad has been treating me for a while and I highly recommend him. My first session was two years ago when I dislocated my shoulder training Jiu-Jitsu, his treatment was fundamental for my recovery and with his help I was able to come back to the mat quickly. Now he is treating my back, every time that I have an appointment with him I go home feeling like a new person. He is definitely a great professional.”

Juliana Mokwa

“I have been seeing Miad regularly for a whole array of sports injuries. I always feel like I am in the hands of an expert and come away feeling like the issue has been assessed and treated properly. I would always recommend him to anyone who suffers like I do. Thank you!”

Nima Hashemi

“Miad is simply the best osteopath you could ever meet! He is helping me recover from a bicep tear and a shoulder injury and, thanks to his treatments, I am still able to train and compete. Miad's jiu-jitsu knowledge and background also enhance his understanding of the pains an athlete goes through and help build a focused rehabilitation plan. Miad is very professional, and his kind aura makes you feel at ease. I totally recommend Mayfair Osteopathy, and I look forward to continuing my healing journey with him.”
